How to Find Your Ring Size

To find your ring size at home, measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits, or wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger and measure its length in millimeters. Match the figure to the chart below. US size 6 is the most common women's size and US size 10 the most common men's.

Measure at the end of the day, when your hands are warm. Fingers can change by as much as half a size between a cold morning and a warm evening, and that is the single most common reason a ring arrives fitting differently than expected.

Method 1 — measure a ring that already fits

The most reliable method, and the only one that works without the wearer present.

  1. Take a ring she already wears on the correct finger.
  2. Lay it flat and measure straight across the inside edge, at the widest point.
  3. Record the figure in millimeters, to one decimal place.
  4. Find it in the diameter column of the chart below.

Measure the inside, not the outside — a thick band can add well over a millimeter, which is more than a full size.

Method 2 — the paper strip

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 100 mm long. Do not use string; it stretches.
  2. Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight.
  3. Mark where the strip overlaps, unwrap it, and measure to the mark in millimeters.
  4. That figure is the circumference. Find it in the chart below.

Check that the strip will pass over the knuckle before you settle on a size. If the knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of the finger, size up by a half so the ring goes on — it will sit slightly loose, which is normal and correct.

Method 3 — ask us

How to size a ring secretly

If this is a surprise, you have several options and none of them require you to give the game away.

  • Borrow a ring. Take one she wears on the correct finger and measure the inside diameter. A ring worn on the right hand is usually a half to a full size larger than the same finger on the left.
  • Press it into soap. Push a borrowed ring into a bar of soap or a piece of modeling clay and measure the impression.
  • Trace it. Draw around the inside edge on paper and measure the circle.
  • Ask someone. Her mother, sister or closest friend usually knows, or can find out without arousing suspicion.
  • Just order. You have 30 days to return or exchange, free. Ordering the most common size and adjusting afterward is a perfectly reasonable plan.

If the size turns out to be wrong

It is not a problem. Every ring comes with free 30-day returns and exchanges, both ways insured. If you would rather have it resized than exchanged, our Worry-Free service plan covers one resizing and cleaning within six months of purchase — you can add it at checkout. How resizing works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common ring size?

US size 6 for women and US size 10 for men. If you have no measurement at all and need to order, those are the safest guesses — and with free 30-day exchanges, a wrong guess costs nothing but a few days.

How do I measure my ring size at home?

Either measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits, straight across at the widest point, or wrap a 5 mm strip of paper around the base of the finger, mark the overlap and measure its length. Match the millimeter figure to a US ring size chart. Do not use string, which stretches.

Should I size up or down between two sizes?

Size up. A slightly loose ring can be resized down easily; a ring that will not pass the knuckle cannot be worn at all. Size up by a half if the knuckle is noticeably larger than the base of the finger.

Does the time of day affect ring size?

Yes, by up to half a size. Fingers are smallest in a cold morning and largest in a warm evening or after exercise. Measure at the end of a normal day, when hands are warm.

Does the width of the band change the size I need?

Yes. A wide band sits against more of the finger and feels tighter than a narrow one of the same size. For bands above about 6 mm, go up a half size.

Can a ring be resized after purchase?

Most can, within a size or two. Eternity bands set with stones all the way around generally cannot, because there is no plain metal to work with. Our Worry-Free service plan covers one resizing within six months.
