Jewelry Size Chart

Every size we work in, in one place. Ring sizes in millimeters, necklace and chain lengths with where each one falls on the body, bracelet sizing, and how to measure each at home with nothing more than a strip of paper and a ruler.

Quick guidance

  • US 6 is the most common women's size; US 10 the most common men's.
  • Measure at the end of the day, when hands are warm. Fingers vary by up to half a size.
  • Bands wider than about 6 mm feel tighter — go up a half size.
  • Between two sizes, choose the larger. A loose ring can be taken in; one that will not clear the knuckle cannot be worn.

Necklace and chain lengths

Necklace lengths and where each sits
Length Name Where it sits
14" (36 cm) Collar Tight around the base of the neck
16" (41 cm) Choker At the base of the neck, on the collarbone
18" (46 cm) Princess Just below the collarbone. The most popular length.
20" (51 cm) Matinee A few inches below the collarbone
24" (61 cm) Matinee At or just above the neckline
30" (76 cm) Opera Below the bust
36" (91 cm) Rope At the waist, or doubled

Two notes worth knowing. A pendant hangs below the chain, so a pendant necklace sits lower than the length alone suggests. And when layering, leave at least two inches between chains so they do not tangle — 16", 18" and 20" is a reliable trio.

How to measure

Wrap a tape measure or paper strip around the neck and let it fall where you want the piece to sit. Measure the strip. That figure is your length.

Bracelet sizes

Bracelet lengths by wrist measurement
Wrist measurement Bracelet length Fit
5.5"–6" 6.5" Small
6"–6.5" 7" Small to medium
6.5"–7" 7.5" Medium — the most common
7"–7.5" 8" Large
7.5"–8" 8.5" Extra large

How to measure

Wrap a paper strip around the wrist just below the wrist bone, snug against the skin, and mark the overlap. Add half an inch for a close fit, or a full inch for a looser drape. Bangles are different — they must pass over the hand, so measure around the widest part of the closed hand with the thumb tucked in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common necklace length?

18 inches, the princess length, which sits just below the collarbone and suits most necklines. A pendant will hang below that point.

What size bracelet should I order?

Measure your wrist just below the wrist bone and add half an inch for a close fit or a full inch for a looser one. Most people wear a 7 to 7.5 inch bracelet.

How do I measure a ring size without a ring sizer?

Measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits, straight across at the widest point, or wrap a 5 mm paper strip around the base of the finger and measure to the overlap. Match the millimeter figure to the chart above. Never use string, which stretches.

What necklace lengths work for layering?

Leave at least two inches between chains. A 16, 18 and 20 inch combination layers cleanly without tangling.

Can jewelry be resized after purchase?

Most rings can be resized within a size or two, and chains can be shortened. Eternity bands set with stones all the way around generally cannot be resized. Everything carries free 30-day returns and exchanges. How resizing works.
